Enzyme Cream Mask

Scrubs use grit. Peels use acid. The Enzyme Cream Mask uses fruit enzymes instead. Bromelain from pineapple and papain from papaya loosen the dull, dead surface layer so it rinses away with the mask, no rubbing required.

Dead surface cells are held together by protein. These two enzymes break that protein down, and they act only on the dead top layer. That is why an enzyme mask feels gentler than a scrub or an acid peel.

The base is a cream of jojoba, shea butter and olive squalane, with glycerin, panthenol (vitamin B5) and allantoin, so skin stays soft and comfortable while the enzymes work. Skin comes out smoother and brighter-looking, ready for the serum and moisturizer that follow.

It is our go-to prep step in facials at The Altar, right before extractions, because softening the surface lets congestion lift more easily. At home, use it once or twice a week.

Scented with champaca flower oil, the only fragrance in the formula. Made with organic ingredients.

Key Ingredients

Bromelain + Pineapple Fruit Extract: Bromelain is the pineapple enzyme. It breaks down the protein that holds dead surface cells in place.

Papain + Papaya Fruit Extract: Papain is the papaya enzyme. It works the same way as bromelain, and the two together give an even, gentle exfoliation.

Jojoba Oil: Very close to the skin's own oil. Moisturizes and balances.

Shea Butter: A rich emollient that softens and protects.

Olive Squalane: A lightweight, olive-derived moisturizer that mirrors the skin's natural sebum.

Glycerin: A plant-derived humectant that pulls water into the skin.

Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Hydrates, supports the skin barrier and soothes.

Allantoin: Calms and helps offset any irritation from exfoliating.

Champaca Flower Oil: A natural floral essential oil and the only fragrance in the product.

Best For

Congestion, dull or rough texture, and skin that finds scrubs or acids too harsh. Usually fine for sensitive skin: start with 5 minutes.

Before You Use It

• Do not use if you are allergic to pineapple, papaya, coconut, or aspirin and salicylates. The ferment preservative contains coconut extract, and the preservative blend contains a small amount of salicylic acid.
• Do not use if you have a latex allergy. Papaya enzyme can cross-react.
• Skip broken skin, open blemishes, sunburn, a rash, or skin still healing from a peel, laser, microneedling or waxing.
• Using retinoids or exfoliating acids? Skip them the night before and the night of.
• Use with care if rosacea or eczema is flaring, or if you use prescription retinoids or acne medication.
• Sensitive to fragrance? It contains champaca oil and benzyl alcohol.
• Pregnant or nursing? Check with your provider first.
• Patch test on the inner arm or jawline before first use.

No synthetic fragrance. No scrubbing grit.

Packaging

Clear glass jar with a white screw-top lid. 2 oz (57 g). Handmade in California. Store it cool and out of direct sun with the lid closed tight, since heat weakens enzymes. Scoop with a clean, dry spatula, never fingers. Labels and photos may vary by batch.

• Apply a thin layer to clean skin, avoiding the eyes and lips.
• Leave on 5 minutes for sensitive skin, up to 10 minutes for other skin types.
• Rinse with water to remove.
• Follow with SPF during the day.
• Follow with Every Wear Oil or Every Wear Butter at night.
• Use once or twice a week.
